Doodle History & Info

Every Doodle Begins with a Poodle

When you cross a Poodle with another  breed, you’re adding some very desirable traits for any pet dog - the Poodle temperament, and the Poodle coat.

Poodles are devoted companions, preferring to be near their people and to please their people above everything else. They have keen intelligence, impressive agility, and thoroughly enjoy all types of games and training. Originally sporting dogs, there are Poodles working in the hunting field to this day.

Our Petite Doodles' family tree consists of Poodles intentionally cross-bred with Golden Retrievers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and other compatible breeds.

Hypoallergenic? Non-Shedding?

The Poodle/Doodle coat can be “hypoallergenic”. Hypoallergenic means less allergenic, not completely non-allergenic.

While Poodles and Doodles are a great choice for many who suffer from mild allergies, it’s important to know that allergic reactions can be triggered by the proteins in the dander, saliva, and even the urine of dogs, so the Poodle coat alone won’t necessarily solve the problem.

If you are allergic to dog dander, your best choice is a Doodle who is "furnished" (naturally grows the classic doodle fuzzy face, mustache, beard, and eyebrows). DNA testing can determine if the dog carries one furnishing gene or two. Two furnishing genes, or "fully furnished", will provide the maximum benefit.

Similarly, Poodles and Doodles are not completely non shedding - but provided the correct Poodle coat genes are present, they are low shedding. We rarely find Doodle hair around the house, the minimal amount of shed comes out during brushing.

"I wish my dog would shed more," said no one, ever.

Is it a Doodle or a Poo?

Between the 1960s and the 1980s, the puppies from intentional Poodle cross-breeding were named with the suffix Poo for Poodle - examples include the Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel/Poodle) and the Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Poodle).

More recently, breeders are calling their Poodle mixes Doodles - examples include the Labradoodle (Labrador Retriever/Poodle) and the Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever/Poodle).

Did You Know? In Australia, Goldendoodles go by the adorable name "Groodles".

Doodle Origins & Popularity

Cockapoos (Cocker Spaniel/Poodle mixes) were the first to gain widespread popularity in the 1960s, and Labradoodle and Goldendoodle breeding began at around the same time.

Monica Dickens, a great-granddaughter of the author Charles Dickens, bred Goldendoodles in the 1960s after she moved from England to the United States, to provide guide dogs for blind owners with allergies.

Poodles have always been a popular breed, and their mixes have also seen a strong rise in popularity in the past 30 years, with no sign of stopping.
